How rising is measured

  • We snapshot the subscriber figure Substack shows publicly every day and compare today's figure with the one from about 30 days ago.
  • Substack rounds these figures, so small newsletters are excluded: a newsletter needs at least 5K subscribers at the start and must add at least 2K and 5%. Otherwise one rounding step would read as a big jump.
  • Growth has to be sustained: it must show up on at least 3 separate days, and no single day can account for more than 50% of the gain. One-day jumps are usually an imported list or a recount, not momentum.
  • Gains above 300% are treated as data errors, and newsletters that haven't posted in 45 days are left out.
  • beehiiv newsletters are not ranked: the figures on their sites are written by the publisher and change in large steps, so they can't show growth reliably.
